" Paper " shouted the hawker from the street... today being Sunday, I wanted to get at least three-four hours extra sleep ... but the lure of crisp newspapers overtook me... But, What I read made me sad... Both "Times of India" and "Hindustan Times" were running cover stories about a 21-yr-old J&K youth shot dead by Army.
Have you ever read any cover story by these two newspapers about funeral of any of our soldiers martyred in J&K ?
"Magray was killed after he ignored calls to stop at an Army ambush following atip-off on terrorist movements in the area, said defence spokesman Lt Col JS Brar. "The troops detected suspicious movement of two persons moving towards the ambush. In accordance with the standard operative procedures, the troops challenged the individuals to surrender. Both paid no heed to the challenge and attempted to run. The troops fired resulting in fatal injuries to Magray," he said, adding the Army had adhered to the rules of engagement".
Some of you might be wondering ' what this ambush thing is ? '...
Let me help you... In a hostile counter insurgency environment where hard actionable intelligence is difficult to come... Armed forces often resort to 'Ambushes'... What happens is that the army makes frequent movements in a particular area... 'Area' where there is a possibility of presence of armed ' Anti National Elements' a.k.a. 'Terrorists'... because of this sustained pressure these 'Anti National Elements' try to sneak out of the area... That is where the 'Ambushes' come into play...
A group of Soldiers goes to a trek at the periphery of a village/ linking the village with others, bridge or a point where river can be crossed easily... there they camouflage themselves to merge with the surroundings... and lie in wait... If they are extremely lucky then a group of armed 'Anti National Elements' will come their way...
Generally such a group is led by their unarmed 'guide'... Who actually is their over ground sympathiser... The trick is to let him/her pass through the ambush without getting detected... Wait for the 'actual catch' & then go for the kill...
But sometimes, somebody from the ambush , is unable to keep his urge to fire under check... & this results in 'accidents & mistakes'...
I am sure that this is what has actually happened in this case.
